Real-world data shines a light on the impact of COVID-19 on psoriasis patients
New research presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology (EADV) 30th Congress reveals COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis patients is being driven by concerns about vaccine safety and aggravation of their underlying condition.

In a second study, also reported at EADV Congress, researchers found no associations between biological therapies and the risk of respiratory tract infections (RTI) or serious infections (SI), including COVID-19.

The findings from both of these studies provide valuable insights for educating and supporting psoriasis patients with regards to the impact of biological treatments on infection, and on the need for COVID-19 vaccinations.

New coin-sized device opens the way for at-home skin cancer treatment, pilot study suggests
A new prototype device that can be used at home to treat basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) significantly reduces pain, while achieving efficacy comparable with a hospital stay. These findings come from a breakthrough pilot study, presented today at the 30th European Association of Dermatology and Venerology (EADV) Congress.

Researchers uncover link between genital warts and the immune system
New research presented today at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology (EADV) 30th Congress reveals a link between genital warts and the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system - the part of the immune system which helps regulate immune responses. This exciting breakthrough sets a new path for potential mRNA vaccinations against HPV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The researchers in Denmark identified 12 protective and seven risk gene variants in the HLA system of 65,791 blood donors that influence risk of genital warts.

Individuals with risk alleles were found to be less successful at recognising the HPV virus and therefore more likely to present with genital warts

Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (hives) a common problem affecting children
A study on the characteristic differences of chronic spontaneous urticaria (commonly presented as hives) has been found to be less severe in children than in adults, with lower rates of angioedema and thyroid autoimmunity.

Findings of the study include shorter disease duration (10.0±18.2), lower occurrence of angioedema (21.8% vs 59.8%; p<0.001) and thyroid autoimmunity (8.9% vs 25.4%; <0.001) in the paediatric group vs. adult group. Moreover, paediatric CSU patients were found to respond better to antihistamines than adult CSU patients.

“Our research is focused on identifying these differences to help inform future treatment of chronic spontaneous urticaria and to provide more information on the effects of CSU on children – something which has previously been neglected in this field of research” shares Professor Emek Kocaturk, Koc University Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey.

Almost half of people in Europe have a skin problem or disease, new EADV survey reveals

Almost half (47.9%) of the European general population (over 18 years old) has declared at least one dermatological condition in the past 12 months, a study by the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology (EADV) has revealed today.

The most common skin condition among those surveyed is fungal skin infection, affecting almost 1 in 10 people. Other common conditions, each affecting more than 1 in 20 people, were atopic dermatitis (eczema), alopecia and acne.

The Burden of Skin Diseases in Europe study is the largest ever undertaken of its kind in Europe. Data has now been collected from 44,689 adults from 27 European countries.

Before EADV undertook this study, little was known about the prevalence of skin diseases in the general population across Europe.
